Definition:
- If F is the force required to produce an acceleration f in a particle of mass m, then by Newton's Second Law of motion. F=mf
- If m is constant,F must obey the same law as f. Hence to produce a Simple Harmonic Motion, the force must be always directed towards a fixed center which is usually the equilibrium position of the particle and its magnitude must be proportional to the displacement from that position.
- The force tending to restore an elastic body to its natural shape or size is found to be of the above nature and a practical instance is the force exerted by an elastic string or spiral spring.
